description: Distribution of the Annex I habitat Species-rich Nardus upland grassland (EU Code - 4060) for the reporting period 2007 - 2012. The Polygon Distribution layer shows the known distribution of the Annex I habitat type. The Distribution is based on a number of sources. There is also a Point Distribution layer included where applicable. The Current Distribution polygon layer shows all 10km grid cells that the Polygon and/or Point Distribution for the Annex I Habitat type The Current Range "...describes roughly the spatial limits within which the habitat or species occurs." (Evans, D. & Arvela, M. (2011) Assessment and reporting under Article 17 of the Habitats Directive. European Topic Centre) .For the purposes of Article 17 reporting the European Topic Centre (ETC) commissioned a Range Tool**, an ArcGIS extension to generate a standardised grid based range in accordance with Article 17 guidance. The tool "...is based on calculating the distances between the centroids of grid cells and then constructing a series of poly lines and polygons to connect other centroids of grid cells based on the ‘gap distance’ specified. All cells that intersect these polylines and polygons, as well as distribution cells are used to create the range(Evans & Arvela, 2011)* The Favourable Reference Range is the“Range within which all significant ecological variations of the habitat/species are included for a given biogeographical region and which is sufficiently large to allow the long term survival of the habitat/species..." (Evans & Arvela, 2011).
